Polyamide 6 FAQs
PA6 and PA66 are both polyamides but have distinct differences:
- Processability: PA6 is easier to process and requires lower tool precision, while PA66 may demand stricter molding conditions.
- Mechanical Properties: PA66 generally has higher strength and hardness compared to PA6. However, PA6 offers better toughness and impact resistance.
- Thermal Properties: PA66 has a higher heat deflection temperature, making it more suitable for high-temperature environments.
- Moisture Absorption: PA6 absorbs moisture at a higher rate than PA66, which may affect dimensional stability.
- Application Choice: The selection between PA6 and PA66 depends on factors like operating temperature, mechanical strength requirements, and processing capabilities.
PA6 has good resistance to oils, greases, and many solvents, making it suitable for various industrial applications.
However, pay attention to the following:
- PA6 is sensitive to strong acids (e.g. sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid) and strong bases (e.g. sodium hydroxide), which can degrade its properties.
- Extended exposure to certain solvents, such as ketones, may lead to surface corrosion or swelling.
Before using PA6 in chemically aggressive environments, verify its compatibility with the specific chemical agents.
Yes, PA6 is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the air. Its moisture absorption rate can range from 1-3%.
Effects of moisture absorption:
- May reduce strength and stiffness while increasing toughness and flexibility.
- Can affect dimensional stability in high-humidity environments.
To mitigate this, fiber-reinforced PA6 grades or proper sealing can be used. Pre-drying PA6 is recommended before processing to maintain material performance (target moisture content: below 0.2%).
Yes, PA6 is widely used in injection molding because of its excellent flow characteristics and ability to produce strong, detailed parts.
Key points for processing:
- Ensure thorough drying before molding to avoid surface defects.
- PA6 has a moderate melting point (~220°C); ensure correct processing settings to achieve optimal results.
PA6 is available in a variety of colors, including:
- Natural (semi-transparent to opaque white), typically used in non-UV-stabilized applications.
- Black, which is common for industrial applications due to its UV resistance and ability to mask defects.
- Custom colors, which can be achieved using masterbatches or pigments tailored to the application.
Keep in mind that adding colors may slightly alter the material’s mechanical properties.
PA6 has a melting point of 220–230°C and can perform continuously up to around 80–100°C under normal conditions.
To extend its use in higher temperatures, specialized PA6 grades can be used:
- Glass-fiber-reinforced PA6: Offers better dimensional stability and can handle temperatures up to 120–150°C.
- Heat-stabilized PA6: Suitable for short-term use in temperatures up to 180°C.
For extreme conditions, consider alternative materials such as PA46 or PPS.
