ABS Processing Guide and Techniques
Guidelines
- Injection Molding: Melt Temp: 220–260°C | Mold Temp: 60–80°C | Clamp Pressure: 500–1,500 bar.
- Drying: 80°C for 2–4 hours to reduce moisture below 0.1%.
- Safety: Use fume extraction above 300°C to mitigate styrene emissions (OSHA PEL: 50 ppm).
Techniques
- Injection Molding: Most common method for complex parts with tight tolerances (processing temperature 220-260°C)
- Extrusion: Used for profiles, sheets, and films (processing temperature 200-230°C)
- Thermoforming: Secondary processing of ABS sheets
- 3D Printing: Increasingly popular for rapid prototyping and small-scale production
- Blow Molding: For hollow products with specific requirements
ABS Grades & Specialized Formulations
Standard Grades
- General Purpose Grade ABS: Balanced properties for everyday applications
- High Impact Grade Resin: Enhanced toughness for demanding conditions
- High Heat Grade ABS: Modified for improved temperature resistance
Special Formulations
- Flame Retardant ABS: Containing additives like brominated compounds or phosphorus-based materials
- Medical Grade ABS: Biocompatible and sterilization-resistant formulations
- Electroplating Grade ABS : Specially formulated for metal plating applications
